A Piece of Cake

Any food preparation starts with a craving I believe and this time it's for a cake.

It's been a very long time since I baked and the oven was just lying there to reheat. Lots of apples were also lying idly consuming space in the refrigerator. I decided to bake an apple cake.

Here goes the recipe. It's very simple and took very little time too.
All purpose flour (1 part)
Powdered sugar (1.5 part)
Melted butter (1 part)
2 eggs
2 spoons of baking powder
3 apples peeled and pureed

I mixed all these in a bowl with a hand whisk. It came out creamy.

Buttered the cake mold.  Dusted with some maida and poured the batter. I preheated the oven for ten minutes and then baked it for a good 25 minutes.

The cake came out well roasted and yummy like this.
But it looked so simple. I decided to decorate it. Added some icing sugar in butter and beat it till creamy. Added some orange food color and pineapple essence. Applied it nicely over the cake.

Still not satisfied added some sprinkles and gems borrowed from my son.

It was finally wow and yummy.

Dummy to Yummy

It was yet another evening when my husband sighed for the umpteenth time when I said it was idlis for dinner.  Though I promised his favorite curry as accompaniment he was not satisfied.

I love idlis and can have it any time of the day and call it a meal. But he thinks otherwise. I would always prefer idlis for my son's dinner as it won't upset his stomach anytime.

I was wondering what to do when I recalled one of my wonderful gourmet moments at bangalore.  I have tasted mint idly and coriander idly at a small hotel at madiwala. But sadly don't recollect it's name or whereabouts exactly.

I decided to replicate the dish. Got a few mint leaves.  Fried it along with a tomato,  onion and a green chilly.  Cooled it and grind it to a paste with salt as required .  Heated a bit oil and poured the paste with  a little water. Added idly at the end and shredded it as I mixed it with the paste.  Here is the yummy mint idly.

I had a bunch of coriander leaves lying low waiting to be rescued in a cover in fridge.  Thought of giving it a chance.  Same recipe as above but replaced the Mint with coriander.

As I was about to wind up and call it a day when my son came asking for his favorite chutney powder with his idly.  I heated a bit of oil in a pan. Added two spoons of chutney powder and fried it for a couple of seconds and added idly.  Podi idly in a different form.

I thought of adding a bit of masala in that but thought better of it.  I made it a separate dish. Now it's time for garam masala idly. Same recipe as above but added garam masala powder instead of the chutney powder.

Finally garlic powder idly.  Andra special garlic powder from Thirumala wet flour shop,  Madipakkam.  It's so yummy and hot and will always leave you asking for more.  I tried frying a bit in oil and added the idly pieces.  And trust me it was yummmmy.

Conclusion:All dummy idlis made yummy.

Snacks to stare and share

Hi all,
This is my first attempt in a food blog. As a foodie,  I hope I do justice to it. Comments and suggestions always welcome.

I started this food blog a whole ago but did not share anything. I didnt know where to start off with. I initially thought of restaurants review as we eat out a lot of times. But later thought of sharing recipes. Now have finally decided to share anything and everything on food.

I sat nibbling a murukku and thinking what to share in my first post when something hit hard.  No,  not that murukku.  It was a soft mini thenkuzhal.  A thought hit hard. Why not share this now?

Here goes all my favorite snacks for the evening.

Yummy macroons

Sweet juicy Kadala mittai

Soft mini thenkuzhal

Meddlesome mixture
Evergreen potato chips

Alluring arumbu murukku

Not to mention, I gobbled more than a few snacks I intended to, while taking the pics. Oops forgot to mention my favorite of the most, masala-kadalai.  Okay, shopping list updated.  Hope you had a scumptous time staring at the snacks. Waiting to share these and more in my upcoming blogs.
